Tokyo Dango 2022
Transcribing Tokyo into Dango
This project transcribes Tokyo’s urban landscape into dango, the traditional Japanese sweet made from rice. In the Kojiki, rice is praised as “Toyoashihara Mizuhōkoku” (the land of freshly ripened rice), and for nearly three millennia it has sustained Japanese life, economy, and the iconic agrarian scenery. Across Japan, rice-based local dishes and confections reflect their region’s unique terroir. In this work, I use rice-made dango as a medium to reframe Tokyo—the world’s capital—as one “local” among many and to explore its place-specific identity.
*Note on “local”: in Japanese usage it’s defined dichotomously as “the provinces versus the capital,” whereas English “local” can encompass the capital itself as one region, revealing different East–West perspectives on locality.

東京をお団子へ写し採る
本作は、東京の都市景観をお団子に写し採るプロジェクトです。古事記に「豊葦原瑞穂国（みずみずしく稲が豊かに実る国）」と記される米は、約三千年にわたり日本人の生活と経済を支え、田園風景という景観をつくってきました。各地の郷土食や菓子においても、米は土地の風土と深く結びついています。本作では、米を原料としたお団子を媒介に、首都としての東京を〈ローカル〉として捉え直し、その風土性を問いかけます。
*〈ローカル〉は日本語では「首都に対比する地方」として定義される一方、英語の “local” には「首都もひとつの地域として含む」という意味合いがあり、東西で捉え方が異なる。
