Bonsai no Utsuwa｜凡才の器 1999
Creation and Destruction
This work merges installation and performance. A transparent PVC container (4.2 m high × 1.5 m wide × 1.5 m deep) is suspended in the atrium of the art school’s main building, and visitors are invited to toss balloons into it.
On the exhibition’s final day, a device—comprised of barbed wire and a five-inch nail crusher—hangs by chains above the container and is released all at once to destroy the balloons. This ritual act sublimates a visceral childhood memory of the atrium and serves as my response to the question, “What are we learning at art school?”

創造と破壊
本作はインスタレーションとパフォーマンスを融合させた作品です。美術大学本館の吹き抜け空間に、高さ4.2m×幅1.5m×奥行1.5mの透明なPVC製容器を吊り下げ、来場者に風船を投じてもらいます。
展示最終日には、容器上部から鎖で吊るされた有刺鉄線と五寸釘製クラッシャーを一斉に落下させ、投入された風船を破壊します。この行為は、幼少期にアトリウムで受けた衝撃を昇華させる儀式であり、「私たちは美大で何を学んでいるのか」という問いに対する制作の答えでもあります。
