ABOUT

Born in Japan, and based in Tokyo, SUMIFUDÉ (Satomi Suzuki) draws on a background in reproductive arts to integrate media art, woodblock printing, and critical thinking into cross-disciplinary works that explore the concept of “Utsushi” (transference or replication).

After studying media art at Tohoku University of Art and Design, she received a government scholarship from the Japan-China Friendship Association to study woodblock printing at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. She later completed her master’s degree at Tokyo University of the Arts, where she focused on context-building through critical thinking. She currently teaches as a part-time lecturer at a university while continuing her artistic practice.

Her representative works include SHITEN chair, which transfers the perspective composition of ukiyo-e prints onto chairs, and Tokyo Dango, a project transforming urban architecture into dumplings. Her exhibition history includes the Yamamoto Kanae Print Award, RAN.tv at Roppongi Art Night, the Krakow International Print Triennale (Poland), Milan Design Week (Italy), and solo exhibitions at Kyoto Yuhikaku Kodokan, among others. Her works are included in the Oda Collection as well as a temple in Japan.
